Oscar Roundtable: The composers

Dec 15, 2008, 09:00 PM ET

Film composers aren't exactly the most social creatures in Hollywood. But when five of this year's Oscar front-runners -- A.R. Rahman (Fox Searchlight's "Slumdog Millionaire"), Howard Shore (Miramax's "Doubt"), Danny Elfman (Focus Features' "Milk"), Alexandre Desplat (Paramount's "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button") and Jan Kaczmarek (Overture's "The Visitor") -- sat down recently with The Hollywood Reporter's Kevin Cassidy, they seized the opportunity for a frank, passionate discussion of the past, present and future of film music. The Hollywood Reporter: Film is a collaborative art, but composers work in relative isolation. Is it strange to get together like this? Jan Kaczmarek: We tend to socialize very little. Much less than writers or directors.
Danny Elfman: Any part of the industry really. In fact, directors and writers tend to seek each other out. God knows actors all seem to know each other. It is the weirdest field for sure.

Nothing is enough, says Rahman

20 Dec 2008, 0045 hrs IST, Bhama Devi Ravi, TNN

CHENNAI: The 'wow' factor has still not left him, says A R Rahman, after his soundtrack for Slumdog Millionaire' won the Golden Globe nominations, and the number Jaiho' fetched him the Satellite Award. It has been a few days since his return from Los Angeles, but Rahman is already looking at raising the bar.

It has been a long journey for him, from 1992, when he debuted as music director in 'Roja', which Time magazine rated as among the Top Ten movie sound tracks. The four time national award winner made a big impact in the international arena in 2004 with Andrew Webber Lloyd's Bombay Dreams.'

"Though I had been in the field for a while by then, I was not doing pure Indian classical or symphony. Yet, after Bombay Dreams' when Germans and other nationals asked for my autograph, I said wow, it's happening,' to myself," says Rahman. And yet, the man whose music makes your soul dance says he has more depths to plumb.

I was completely devastated after Mumbai attacks: ARR

AR Rahman and music are synonymous. The mellifluous magic that the maestro composes enchants the very being of listeners across the world. His soulful music is a balm in these chaotic times, when India wreathes in pain after repeated terror attacks on its integrity and bloodbath in the name of region and religion.

And now he has won the prestigious Golden Globe nomination for his compositions for the internationally acclaimed ‘Slumdog Millionaire.’

In an exclusive interview to Spicezee.com’s Swati Chaturvedi in ‘Kahiye Janaab’, AR Rahman shares his views on these turbulent times, his music and much more.

Swati: Being an artist, you are all the more sensitive to the problems that are plaguing the nation. What is your reaction to the terror attacks in Mumbai?

Rahman: I was completely devastated. The whole week was very bad. I had to finish a film. I finished the film and left for America. I was going through stress and extreme sadness. It took me almost a week to return back to my normal self.

AR Rahman: Jai Ho, MJ!

June 26, 2009 17:34 IST
A R Rahman paid tribute to pop idol Michael Jackson  in a statement. Take a look:

I am shocked at the untimely passing away of Michael Jackson, one of the greatest musicians of our time. MJ, for most of our generation was an icon who made uncompromising music. He pushed the milestone of pop music to unbelievable levels
through the 8os and 90s. I am yet to find an artist with that energy, perfection and vision.

I met him personally after the Oscars in Los Angeles and we vibed very well. He said that he loved India and the Indian people. He said he heard good things about me and he was praising the chord progression of Jai Ho's chorus.

He was bursting with energy and told me that every dance move he did, came from his soul and did a five second stunning example. It was like a lightning strike :)

He was concerned about developmental issues such as global warming and about wars and its damages to the human community.

He asked me to compose a unity anthem on the likes of We are the World for him. I nodded in awe ...!

He introduced me to his three lovely bright Kids. The kids told him "I love you dad" and he replied "I love you more" as a proud father. I wished him well for his concerts and he said "God Bless you".

After hearing the shocking news I wished it was another rumour which would fade away soon. It took me time to believe that he is no more.

I remember, my late sound engineer Sridhar had brought me a video of the premiere of Remember the Time when I was recording Kadal Rojave for my first movie Roja. Seeing it inspired all of us that afternoon.

Now, there is no Sridhar and no Jackson anymore. I hope all of us value people's existence more and respect them when they are alive.

LIFE IS SHORT...! Artists and their art live for ever. Jai Ho, MJ ! We love you for your music, regardless of all the controversies!

Rahman’s dream

HRM
Musician AR Rahman thinks that Indians should stop talking about their traditions and start contributing to its greatness. In an interview with CNN-IBN, he talked about his music conservatory, where he will groom the next breed of composers.

“We only celebrate what is tradition which is great, which is fantastic. But what have you contributed?” demanded Rahman. Rahman founded the K M Conservatory to churn out students with musical excellence matching International standards.

"Composers from here like me and Ilayaraja sir, anybody, who wants to work with an orchestra with full symphony orchestra - we had to go abroad and spend thousands of dollars," explained Rahman. However, today students from India and abroad can come to the K M Conservatory and learn both Indian and Western classical music, including a range of musical instruments from the cello to the drums.

There is a preparatory course for beginners, a foundation one for serious pursuers, apart from this there is also a three year degree course in collaboration with the Middlesex University. Most importantly, the conservatory also aims at reviving dying musical traditions.

"Though we want to concentrate on instruments that are dying like violin and brass and woodwinds and everything, people are more interested in piano and composition and voice and all that stuff. We are also looking at areas where we don't have players like brass and woodwinds and so many instruments for which we used to have players before, in the older generation but not anymore," he said.

Michael Jackson loved India, says A.R. Rahman

Staff Reporter
“Yet to find an artist with that energy, perfection and vision”

CHENNAI: Music maestro A.R. Rahman, who is now in Los Angeles, said he was shocked at the “untimely passing away” of Michael Jackson, who he described as “one of the greatest musicians of our time.”

In a tribute to the ‘King of Pop,’ Rahman said Jackson, for most of this generation, was an icon who made uncompromising music. He pushed the milestone of pop music to unbelievable levels through the Eighties and Nineties. “I am yet to find an artist with that energy, perfection and vision.”

Recalls meeting

Recalling his recent meeting with Jackson after the Oscars in Los Angeles, Rahman said the meeting was very pleasant and memorable. “He said he loved India and the people of the country. He told me that he heard good things about me and he was praising the chord progression of Jai Ho’s chorus.”

Expressing his awe for Jackson, Rahman said the star was bubbling with energy. “He told me that every dance move he did, came from his soul.” Reminiscing the five second-demonstration that the ace performer gave, he said: “It was a stunning example…like a lightning striking.”

Unity anthem

Jackson was concerned about issues such as global warming and war. “He asked me to compose a unity anthem on the lines of ‘We are the World’ for him. I nodded in awe.”

Jackson also introduced Rahman to his children. They told their father that they loved him and he replied “I love you more!” When Rahman wished him well for his concerts, Jackson told him “God bless you.”

On hearing the news of Jackson’s death, Rahman said he wished it were another rumour. “It took me time to believe that he is no more.”

Describing how his team drew inspiration from Jackson, Rahman said: “I remember, my late sound engineer Sridhar brought me a video of the premiere of ‘Remember the Time,’ when I was recording ‘Kadal Rojave’ for my first film Roja. We were all so inspired that afternoon.”

“Now, there is no Sridhar and no Jackson anymore. I hope all of us value people’s existence more and respect them when they are alive. Life is short. Artists and their art live for ever. Jai Ho, MJ ! We love you for your music, regardless of all the controversies,” Rahman said.

The Oscar changed my life: ARR

IndiaGlitz [Thursday, June 04, 2009]

How life changes after one award. Ask our very own composing guru AR Rahman. After the Oscars ARR who had already been a busy man in India, has been receiving offers and accolades from left, right and centre. Rahman was also named as one of the top 100 influential persons in the world by the prestigious Times magazine recently!

For the Chennai-based music composer life definitely has changed after the Academy awards. When asked how he feels now after the world recognition, Rahman revealed that getting the twin Oscars was a very unnerving experience. The composer who cannot attend even places of prayer without being noticed feels he has to now concentrate more on his music because that is his first priority.

The Indian Mozart who has literally been living out of his travel bags (thanks to the adulations he has been receiving after the Oscars) literally broke his past records for traveling the past week. He was in New York, Dubai, Calicut, Chennai, Pune Delhi Mumbai, the list goes on!

There seems to be only one downside that the Oscars have brought into ARR’s life. The composer is not able to spend much time with his children. But ARR is not complaining. All he says is that before the Oscars his wife had dreamt that she was walking the red carpet by his side. She can now dream of walking to the Oscars with our children, says ARR.

To a scribe’s query on how he felt being voted as one of the top hundred influential persons of the world the music director said and we quote: At the function I was on the same table as Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey and the CEO of Time magazine. When I went up to stage a chant of ‘Jai ho’ went up in the house

Wow! ARR sir it must have been a moment to cherish!

We at IndiaGlitz wish you the best in all your future endeavors and hope your music will be a note of love and peace to the entire world!

Rahman rocks Kozhikode with Jai Ho premiere

Rahman performs at the premiere of his world tour Jai Ho in Kozhikode on Sunday evening

By Ashraf Padanna

Thiruvananthapuram: Music maestro A R Rahman kicked off his ‘Jai Ho-A R Rahman Live’ world tour with a spectacular performance before an estimated 50,000 euphoric fans in the northern Kerala city of Kozhikode on Saturday evening.
This will be the first world tour for the ‘Mozart of Madras’ after winning two Oscars for his music in Slumdog Millionaire this year and the fourth in his career spanning nearly two decades.
The proceeds of the live show, the first of 39 such shows to be conducted all over the world, will go for the rehabilitation of HIV-affected children.
Though his itinerary for the world tour is yet be finalised, sources said Rahman would perform live in the Gulf, the US, Canada and East Asia besides a number of north Indian cities during the next five years.
Rahman, whose father R K Shekhar spent most of his career setting scores for Malayalam films, was here for the first time for a live concert.
“I have wanted to come here for the past 15 years,” he told the cheering audience in between the songs - in English, Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam. “I would be delighted to return to Kozhikode once more.”
Malayali singers Sayanora joined Rahman to sing Athiradee, a popular number from the Rajani hit Sivaji. Rahman also led the chorus for the Malayalam song Padakali that he scored for the Malayalam movie Yodha in 1992.
Singers Hariharan, Sadhana Sargam, K S Chitra, Rashid Ali, Javed Ali, Mohamed Aslam and Raja Hassan also delighted the audience with the choicest of Rahman numbers during the 180-minute non-stop show.
The stage set up for the show was billed as one of the largest ever built in Kerala, with an 80,000-watt sound system and a hydraulic system to raise a section of the stage.
Earlier, the state government hosted a reception in his honour which was attended by prominent personalities in the city. Industries Minister Elamaram Karim, Forest Minister Benoy Viswom and Water Resources Minister N K Premachandran jointly presented a memento to Rahman.
Rahman said Sukhwinder Singh, the original singer of the award winning song Jai Ho, who was absent at the concert here, will be part of the shows in northern India. “The way we have figured out this concert is with completely new talent, so Sukhwinder will be part of northern India concerts. From southern India, we have a selection of extraordinary talent,” Rahman said.

When music felicitated Rahman

3 Mar 2009, 0028 hrs IST, Manigandan KR

TOP HONOURS: Musicians wishing Oscar winner A R Rahman
the Bafta and the Golden Globe.

It was a rare occasion on Sunday as musicians from across Kollywood gathered to felicitate music director A R Rahman for having won the Oscars,

It was a sight to behold as almost all the legendary music composers gathered on stage at the Cine Musicians Union auditorium to praise the man of the moment, even as a packed auditorium cheered lustily almost everytime his name was mentioned.
The first to bless the young achiever was veteran Carnatic singer and music director Balamuralikrishna. “I shouldn’t praise him too much, as a father should praise his son only in his heart,” he said. He was followed by Producer AVM Saravanan, who showered praises on Rahman.
However, Saravanan also made use of the opportunity to point out that the Indian government hadn’t honoured veteran musicians like M S Viswanathan, who had been contributing to Kollywood for the last 70 years, and lyricist Vaali, who had been penning lyrics for the last 50 years.
“I don’t know why they haven’t been honoured. I believe there is a committee to look into it. I’d like to use this opportunity to draw the attention of those concerned to this issue,” he said.

Maestro Ilayaraja, who spoke on the occasion, said, “Even if they place a golden crown on Rahman’s head (and he deserves it too) in a function, it would still not match this evening.”

“Not all buds bloom and not all those that bloom become fruits. Similarly, not all the movies go to the Oscars and not all that go get selected. Only a select few get selected. This does not mean that those that have not been selected are inferior,” he said.

“Awards have no value without composers. But for the first time, a person from here has gone to the west and commanded the honour. We need to honour that,” he said, to loud cheers. The veteran music director also gifted a gold chain on the occasion to A R Rahman.
But the best description of the function came from veteran singer S Janaki, who said, “Today, music has felicitated Rahman.”
In his acceptance speech, Rahman started off with his famous phrase — Ella Pughazhum Irraivanukke. Rahman said that his parents had sown the seeds and that he had only reaped the harvest. “It’s the aspiration of all the musicians... I think God selected me to collect the award on their behalf,” he added.

Others who spoke on the occasion included director K Balachandar, music directors M S Viswananthan, Harris Jayaraj, Vidyasagar, Yuvan Shankar Raja, Bharadwaj and Shankar Ganesh.

Soundarya all geared to release Sultan

26 Apr 2009, 0000 hrs IST

Time for another Rajinikanth release!

Soundarya Rajinikanth is all set to release her magnum opus, the animated film Sultan — The Warrior, featuring Superstar Rajinikanth in July.

Originally slotted for a Pongal release, the film was shifted to April 14. It would have been an ideal summer release, but alas! The post production work delayed the process. Since Sultan is an animation film and Soundarya wanted her dream project to be flawless, the unit is buying time to perfect the movie. Initially, a Hollywood house was supposed to fund the project, but now, it looks like Soundarya will have to complete and distribute the project. With AR Rahman busy with his international commitments, we wonder who’s scoring the music.

First Authorized biography of A.R.Rahman to release in 2010

9th June, 2009

Since 1992 when A R Rahman was remarked for his extraordinary musical talent in Roja, his music has come to captivate music lovers all over India who have no hesitation in showing their passion for his work, equalled by their respect for his way of thinking and admiration for how lightly and modestly he wears his success.

The best Indian directors want him as he gives life to film scenes through his melodic and exhilarating songs. Through his background scores, he has unlocked the doors to a sophisticated understanding of sound perspective in Indian cinema. He is an unstoppable talent and it isn’t surprising that he was chosen to compose for international stage and cinema productions. And while most world composers dream of winning an Oscar — Rahman made India and his millions of fans proud by walking away with two Oscars in one night.

A.R.Rahman — The Spirit of Music, the only authorized biography, will be presented in the form of a ‘book of conversations’ between A R Rahman and Nasreen Munni Kabir. Despite the fact that he has already made himself a place in musical history and enjoys extraordinary international success, Rahman is a deeply private person who shies away from glitz and glamour. This book will provide a rare chance to discover A R Rahman, in his own words, as he takes us on a journey through his life and world of music.

Notes on the author: Documentary filmmaker/writer Nasreen Munni Kabir has written several books on Indian cinema, including Guru Dutt, a life in cinema, Talking Films/Talking Songs with Javed AkhtarThe Immortal Dialogue of Mughal-e-Azam and most recently,Lata Mangeshkar…in her own voice. She has also made the documentaries The Inner/Outer World of Shah Rukh Khan.

Cashing in on Rahman's fame?

10 Jun 2009, 1240 hrs IST, MUMBAI MIRROR

The much-hyped ‘authorised biography’ on AR Rahman titled AR Rahman: The Musical Storm has hit a sour note even before its release.

The book by Kamini Mathai has been widely hyped and marketed as the ‘first authorised biography’ on the ‘Mozart of Madras.’

However, the desi Mozart is neither flattered nor amused. He very clearly states that there’s nothing authorised about it. Says Rahman, “The claim that it’s an authorised biography is wrong.”

According to sources close to Rahman, the musician is not amused by various attempts to cash in on his global fame.

Says a close friend of Rahman, “Though Rahman is oblivious to the outside world and doesn’t understand the commercial aspects of his superstardom, he isn’t oblivious to the ‘Cash in on Rahman’ factory that flourishes far and wide.”

As far as a biography is concerned, Rahman plans to write his own story. So the question of authorising a biography doesn’t arise. And that is that.

BSF jawans to march to A R Rahman's beats

New Delhi (PTI): Oscar winner A R Rahman, who enchanted the world with his 'Jai Ho' number, has now composed the theme song for BSF, his first for any paramilitary force.

The five minute song-- 'Hum Seema Suraksha Bal... Veeron ka hai ye dal' (We are the Border Security Force... it is the force of the brave) composed by Rahman praises the strength and valour of the border force.

"The credit for the song goes to Meghalaya Governor R S Mooshahary who is a former DG of the force. He helped us in getting in touch with Rahman, who composed the song without charging any money for it," BSF Director General M L Kumawat told PTI on the sidelines of a function here during which the song was played for the public for the first time.

The song, which also captures the emotional tribulations of a jawan guarding the border while leaving his family behind, comes with a video showing the BSF men in action along the border, undergoing training and the famous 'change of guard' ceremony at the Wagah border.

"The song and the video capture the true spirit of the force. Rahman has also promised to come and spend time with our men to boost their morale," Kumawat said.

A BSF jawan, present at the function said, "It is a matter of pride that my idol Rahman has composed a song for me ".

Rahman on a roll with Mick Jagger

7 May 2009, 0612 hrs IST, Bhama Devi Ravi, TNN

CHENNAI: When Academy Awards meets Grammy, can there be any doubt that the song will rock? Double Oscar winner A R Rahman ( Slumdog Millionaire')

and Mick Jagger, the rocking lead vocalist of Rolling Stones, are set to come together for a song to be unveiled on September 21, the United Nations' International Day of Peace.

"Talks are underway and discussions are progressing well," confirmed sources clsoe to A R Rahman. The Mozart of Chennai' has spent more days in Los Angeles in the recent weeks and hectic parleys are underway. "Further talks are needed to fine tune who is doing what," said sources.

Rahman who was in Kochi earlier this week for a felicitaiton ceremony and a concert, is scheduled to visit the USA soon. Others set to join the project include singer Joss Stone and Damian and Stephen , the two soms of Jamaican musician Bob Marley. Rapper and actor Nas is also part of the team. Stone and Jagger came together in 2004, for the soundtrack of Alfie' and, according to sources, it was a satsifactory outing on all scores. Jagger and Joss are believed to be particularly excited about the project, "due to the glittering line-up of the musicians proposed."

If Rahman's Chinna chinna aasai' in Roja' (1992) had the entire country discovering a new genre of film music, millions more tuned into his music when he performed Jai Ho' at the Oscars ceremony earlier this year. "No one else has quite been on a song as Rahman, whose fusion of tradtional Indian music with new sounds emanating from technology has so much soul," said lyricist Prasoon Joshi, while commenting on Rahman's music months ago. The result is a global rhythm that has set the world of music rocking.

Rahman, whom Time magazine recently counted among the 100 most influential people was born as A S Dileep/ He showed musical prowess even as a seven-year-old. He effortlessly replayed the notes of a harmonium whose frets were covered with a cloth. "He was not even eight years old then," recalls his mother Kareema Begum. He was all of 11 years when he debuted in music director Ilayaraja's troupe, and opened up the magical world of synthesiser, the guitar and the harmonium. Where else would you stumble upon Spanish notes, hip-hop and suddenly be transported by the joyous notes of a flute? Four-time winner of National awards, besides the BAFTA Award and the Golden Globe, Rahman had earleir told TOI that his guiding philosophy in life and music is Sufism, where humility is a way of life.

Rahman advocates free hugs for peace

Prithwish Ganguly

Music has the ability to transcend all barriers — linguistic, regional and religious — and AR Rahman’s new, non filmi musical offering proves that once again. Deeply disturbed by the recent terror attacks and the fact that religion is being used by some divisive factions to de-stabilise the country, Rahman has teamed up with his long-time pal, percussionist Sivamani and Universal Music to create a song titled Jiya Se Jiya that promotes unity among people irrespective of their class, caste or religion.

It is not his first effort to pay a tribute to India and her sovereignty. Rahman’s Maa Tujhe Salaam, like Jiya Se Jiya, had no stars in it but had touched the hearts of the countrymen. Rahman says, “In today’s age, a song like Jiya Se Jiya becomes even more relevant as it spreads the message of embracing everyone irrespective of their region, religion or language.”

The song has already been made into a music video which shows how people are randomly hugging strangers thereby bringing a smile on everyone’s face at a time when tension, trauma and terrorism have become an integral part of a person’s life. In the video, the people are carrying placards with ‘Free Hugs’ written on them as they promote unity and brotherhood.

A source had earlier tipped us about it. “Rahman wanted to do something that emphasised that religion or language cannot create a wall between people. He was very upset how people were being used against their fellow countrymen by individuals with personal agendas with the intention of perpetuating divisions. The song subtly hints that if people don’t think about issues like religion and caste, they can remain one, united. He teamed up with Sivamani and is very happy to have contributed to such a noble act,” said the source.

"I feel, as a modern classical musician, having the knowledge of both music performance and music technology is invaluable. Only having the skill to perform an instrument may not necessarily be lucrative, however having that skill as well as excellent music production capabilities will ensure many more career opportunities and financial security. That way they learn to use the best of both worlds.”
